Active Steps aims to support people living in South West Edinburgh to become more physically active, increase time spent in green space and build social connections. We will set you on track for a happier, healthier lifestyle. We offer some gentle exercise classes suitable for people with mobility issues and those new or returning to exercise. Classes include chair-based exercise, indoor and outdoor circuits, a walking group and seated yoga. We can offer support in a gym environment. We also run regular healthy lifestyle groups which have the added benefit of peer support.

Who can benefit?

Leading a healthier lifestyle, including being more active and eating a healthier diet is a positive step for everyone and we know that these are behaviours that also have a positive impact on mental well being. You are welcome to self-refer or your GP may refer you to our services. Anyone can access these services. You do not have to be referred by a Community Link Worker.

Active Steps can help with any of the following:

  • Weight management

  • One or more long term conditions such as: type 2 diabetes; pre-diabetes; COPD; high blood pressure; arthritis; high cholesterol

  • social isolation

Our activities are suitable for all levels of fitness regardless of your health and well being. The process starts with an initial one to one chat to explore your individual health needs. Then you may be registered for one of our services or another service in Edinburgh – depending on what’s best for you and your current situation.

Men’s Green Shed

Men’s Green Shed is a social group that meets fortnightly on a Monday from 11am until 4pm and as we don't actually have a shed we get out and about exploring castles, galleries, islands, the countryside, industrial heritage sites and old railways as well the all that Edinburgh has to offer. This group has been described as a cross between ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ and the ‘Bash Street Kids’ – it’s all very friendly and great fun.”

Park & Stride

Park and Stride is our weekly gentle walking group for people with long term health conditions and disabilities. The group emerged from our successful Walk with a Doc pilot project and was designed by participants. We meet on Wednesday’s at 11am in Saughton Park for a wander, a blether and a cuppa.
